Barnes & Noble at the Bella Terra Mall hosts a “Bookfair” as fundraising support for Huntington Beach Reads One Book (7881 Edinger Avenue, Huntington Beach). Funds are used to purchase copies of the featured book for local high school students, host readers’ events, and to bring authors to Huntington Beach.
Tell the cashier you are participating in the Bookfair for Huntington Beach Reads One Book and a percentage of your purchase will be donated to the program.

PAUL TAYYAR BOOK SIGNING – 7 p.m., Saturday, December 5
HB Reads committee member and blogger Paul Kareem Tayyar also is an accomplished author! Paul will hold a lively book discussion and sign his latest poetry book, “Postmark Atlantis”, on the second level of the Bella Terra Mall’s Barnes & Noble, 7881 Edinger Avenue, Huntington Beach. Paul’s previous books of poems are “Scenes From A Good Life” and “Everyday Magic”.
Paul is a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee and his work recently was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. “Postmark Atlantis” is a carefully selected collection of poems by Paul, told from the perspective of a mystical, perhaps godlike homeless veteran. You’ll be able to pick up a copy of Paul Tayyar’s book at Barnes & Noble that evening, as part of the HB Reads Bookfair.

CHILDREN’S HOUR – 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010.
HB Reads committee members Mary Lou Hughes, LeRoy Lucian and Sheryl Crockey host two separate children’s hours at the Oakview Branch Library (17251 Oak Lane), one at 2 p.m. (kindergarten through third grade) and one at 3 p.m. (fourth through fifth grade). Following the theme of this year’s featured book, the children’s hour features interactive African Drumming, dancing, crafts projects and storytelling. This promises to be a rollicking good time for the little ones!

DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL – 7 p.m., Thursday, February 4, 2010
HB Reads hosts the documentary film “God Grew Tired of Us.” Winner of the Audience Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, God Grew Tired of Us is an engrossing account of John Bul Dau, Daniel Abol Pach and Panther Blor who were orphaned by the conflict in Sudan. They were among the 25,000 “Lost Boys” who fled villages, formed surrogate families and sought refuge from famine, disease, wild animals and rebel soldiers. Filmmakers Christopher Dillon Quinn and Tommy Walker follow John, Daniel and Panther starting in a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya, across the Atlantic Ocean, to their new life in America. Meet the co-author of “They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky”, Judy Bernstein, second level of Barnes & Noble at the Bella Terra Mall (7881 Edinger Avenue, Huntington Beach). A volunteer with the International Rescue Committee, Judy met Benson Deng, Alephonsion Deng and Benjamin Ajak when they first arrived in the United States as refugees. Her job was to mentor and help them find their way as they assimilated to life in America. Providing each of them with notepaper, Judy asked them to write about their experiences in Sudan, resulting in “They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky”. Judy’s insight into the authors’ lives adds a new dimension to your reading of our featured book.

HB Reads hosts the documentary film, “War Child.” "Left home at the age of seven/one year later I'm carryin' an Ak-47." For hip hop artist Emmanuel Jal, forced to be a child soldier in Sudan's brutal civil war, these lyrics are the story of his life. Today, Jal fights to bring peace to Sudan. Interspersing original interviews, live concerts, and rare footage of Jal as a seven year-old boy, War Child will make viewers cry, laugh, dance, and celebrate the power of hope. War Child was an Audience Choice Award winner at the Tribeca International Film Festival. Shop the world at an International Craft Fair and learn a little more about the people behind the craftwork. Along with great shopping, HB Reads hosts an “Acts of Compassion” program providing a glimpse into the lives of Southern California refugees. HB Reads committee member LeRoy Lucian has put together a great evening with special guest speakers. The International Craft Fair and “Acts of Compassion” program is at the Huntington Beach Central Library, Rooms C & D on the lower level (7111 Talbert Avenue). Doors open to shopping at 6 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m.

AUTHOR VISIT – Thursday, March 11, 2010
HB Reads is bringing the authors of “They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky” to Huntington Beach on March 11, 2010. They will meet with local high school students at a multi-high school assembly during the day, and with the community at an evening program for the general public. Their compelling story—told from the viewpoint of children with no parents to guide them—and their gentle, positive spirit is a moving experience for readers.
After fleeing Sudan as young boys, Benson Deng, Alephonsion Deng and Benjamin Ajak survived on their own for five years before reaching the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northern Kenya. They began to learn English sitting under trees and writing in the sand. For the next nine years, living on a half cup of cornmeal a day, they dedicated themselves to education. They became known to the world as the “Lost Boys of Sudan.”
